[2010] Legend of the Fist. Return of Chen Zhen

China, 1920. While China has been traumatized by military skirmishes in the era of the warlords, Shanghai is the center of attention, a place between heaven and hell. One of the most memorable heroes of the city is Chen Zhen, who single-handedly avenged the death of his master by killing all his murderers in a Japanese dojo in Honkou, but was eventually stopped by a hail of bullets as he launched his legendary flying kick. Since disappeared, was presumed dead although his body was never found. Seven years later, a wealthy businessman named Koo returns from abroad with a grand entrance on the social scene in Shanghai thanks to his friendship with the most important mob boss in town. But this mystery man is none other than Chen Zhen disguise to infiltrate the criminal empire. He soon discovers an underground connection between the mafia and the Japanese. Disguised as a masked crusader, Chen sets out to destroy his martial arts by this evil alliance that threatens the country. Its most important mission is to discover the list of murders that prepare the Japanese.

To start this new phase of the blog I chose this movie for several reasons:

Has been the most anticipated premiere of 2010.
It stars the most coveted star of the moment.
is the remake of one of my top 5 favorite.

However I must say that I have left a somewhat bitter taste after watching it.
Pros:
film is a visual feast with stunning photography quality, this shows the great progress of the Hong Kong industry.
Cons:
The fights are not what they expected. Sadly I see a Hong Kong fell in movies full of cliches, very shallow in the plot and a simple unpleasant. So far, Asian films have been characterized to have a different narrative style, non-linear and very striking, but this time the plot was very superfluous almost imaginable.
Let's talk about the martial. Donnie Yen definitely is in excellent shape, but the whole film could not avoid comparisons with Jet Li. Frankly I see a Donnie impresses no fights, fighting style is the same as Flashpoint, In The Line of Duty, Sha Po Lang among others. The interesting thing about Jet Li in his interpretation of Chen Zhen was new and different styles, ie, they may feel different in essence Shaolin martial tune, The One, Unleashed and Fist Of Legend. Always enthralled with something different. But Donnie, but it remains a great teacher and an example martial, he saw several repetitive movements without imagination. A fighting style that looked alien to a traditional film, ie not combined it with the scenery. The trained eye movements expected to see more traditional and less modern choreography police. And because it meant the continuation of a classic, expected more respect to fidelity. That is, the character of Chen Zhen was totally different from that shown by the 1995's. In fact it seemed a completely different character. Obviously, each actor has its own style, but it must be consistent with the character.
In short many bells and whistles, much budget for the visual and post-production, but little effort devoted to the martial essence is what MAMOVIES longed to see.
